FCS
Software has always believed in encouraging its employees to be
at their creative best because it is an efficient and motivated
employee who brings in revenues by serving the client well. The
first business focus of FCS Software is to take care of its employees,
empower them with the right skills and work environment and create
a stress-free workplace.
FCS is an IT services company that provides customised
solutions to its clients. “Every project has its own complexities,
and our ability to provide solutions is in fact the direct result
of the output of our people. In our group, we stress the fact that
it is not the company that pays them their salaries; but the client
whom we service so efficiently,” says Rajeev Ranjan, vice
president (operations), FCS Soft-ware. The company has been able
to grow without any outside funding and primarily by deploying its
internal accruals for its growth every year.
Nurturing talent
The company has realised that talent acquisition
is the single-most critical activity that would either drive its
business up or down. The ability to service its clients is based
on its ability to staff all projects with right kind of people.
FCS recruits professionals primarily with engineering and MBA degrees
from full-time, known institutes. The nature of its work is such
that they always need trained and experienced people. “But,
the most valuable component is to ensure that new people have same
kind of cultural background and chemistry as that of our existing
people,” says Ra-njan. Apart from technical and verbal interviews,
FCS also conducts analytical tests, somewhat similar to what Microsoft
does when hiring people.
As far as management of its employees is concerned,
FCS gives opportunity to its people to do what they do best. “We
believe that if we can analyse and ask people to do what they know
and love to do, there is no need to supervise them closely,”
says Ranjan.
The people management part is where the company
thinks, it may be miles apart from other organisations. Its people-managers
are supposed to act more as facilitators and not someone who are
breathing down the neck of their staff. The company also uses a
360-degree appraisal mechanism to ensure that its people are not
‘managed’, but empowered and challenged.
Skill set is important
Productivity is at the top of FCS’s agenda.
To improve the productivity of its employees, FCS has evolved a
two-pronged strategy. Firstly, the company channels the passion
and creativity of its people. To achieve this, it has based its
core values and work culture to provide a workplace where the employees
feel empowered and respected. Secondly, the company has an ‘FCS
University’—a corporate varsity to train and prepare
its staff members to develop their IT and leadership skills.
The FCS Leadership
Programme (FLP) prepares middle managers to handle
their team members, more as facilitators rather than as bosses.
Both these initiatives are driven by a blended learning model of
providing online content, but making the learning instructor-led.
For people related activities, the company has a budget of Rs 16,000
per person per annum.
Extra curricular activities
Apart from FCS University and FCS Leadership,
which help in creating a learning environment, the company has formulated
many other people-development initiatives. These include relaxing
activities to create a good work environment like annual tours,
picnics, parties and participating in tournaments. FCS also organises
various indoor events like antakshari, tambola, etc, for its employees.
These activities are organised by the four extra-curricular activity
houses, namely Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire, Topaz, which have cross-departmental
memberships. This is to bring employees from different departments
together in fun activities so that they work together and build
a level of trust, which ultimately translates into smoother working
relationships. “All these activities work as relaxants and
we perceive them to be critical investment in our people,”
informs Ranjan.
Social responsibility
Apart from fun and frolic, encouraging contribution
to the society also forms an integral part of the company’s
work ethics. FCS participates in various events for social causes.
The company won the CRY-Cadence Cricket Trophy this year to contribute
to Child Relief Fund. Recently, it has also donated a fully equipped
lab with physiotherapy equipment to a school for children with special
needs. The company plans to engage in more education programmes
for preparing children to make success of their dreams. These programmes
will target children from the deprived sections of society. FCS
is also the process of taking relevant permissions to donate used
computers to Sri Aurobindo Ashram.
