HCL Comnet, a 100 percent subsidiary of HCL Technologies
and a leading IT infrastructure management company, has bagged a
Rs 10 million order from Visveswaraiah Technolog-ical University
(VTU), Belagum to set up a state-of-the-art campus-wide Wireless
Local Area Network (W-LAN).
The technology, which has deployed 802.11b,
based
W-LAN offering 11 Mbps throughputs will offer
secure access using high-end 128 bit encryption and the benefit
of complete mobility to its users. This would allow users to have
network and Internet access from anywhere in their building and
also enable them to quickly induct new employee/staff to the network.
The first phase of the project will involve establishing
a 1,000 node campus LAN, connecting five post-graduate departmental
buildings, two regional offices, the administration block, library,
auditorium, hostels, guest house and residential quarters. Besides
setting up of the complex network, HCL Comnet will also remotely
monitor the entire IT, network and security infrastructure of VTU
from its Operations and Management Centre (OMC) in Noida. In the
second phase of the project, VTU plans to extend its connectivity
programme to a state-wide WAN to facilitate online examination.
Commenting on the project, K. Balveera Reddy,
vice chancellor of VTU said, This project is the stepping
stone towards enhancing e-learning in the country. With 125 colleges
under VTU, we are confident that the technology deployment at this
level will change the way education will take place.
VTU envisages this network to become the backbone
of all its services to its students, as they will be able to conduct
research activities, scientific work, administration work, etc,
through this network.
In addition to this, electronic classrooms, virtual
classrooms and Internet-based learning; online examinations are
in the pipeline. In the offing is an online digital library which
will have digital books, magazines and journals, which could be
simultaneously accessed by a large group of students, staff and
community.
According to Arup Chakra-borty, general manager
of networking services, HCL Comnet, Implementation of network
connectivity at VTU is a reinforcement of our networking capabilities,
specifically for the education segment. The successful implementation
of this project substantiates our innovation with technology and
our endeavour to provide the best value propositions to our customers.
HCL Comnet has undertaken unique initiatives
in the education segment with institutions like the IIT Mumbai,
where it set up SpaceTeach; a VSAT-based interactive, two-way distance
education application; and IIT Kharagpur where Indias first
muliti-service IP network for student campus was set up.
