NIIT launches ‘Planetworkz’

NIIT recently launched ‘Planetworkz’, a new initiative to address the manpower needs of the growing IT enabled services (ITES) industry in India. Planetworkz’s first offering, Certificate in Customer Service, is a 30-day programme that prepares young enthusiastic fresh hires in generic education for ITES career.

According to NIIT, the offerings were perfected over a year of rigorous and intensive pilots in Bangalore, in collaboration with leading players like iSeva, American Express, Daksh and Spectramind.

Launching the initiative Rajendra S Pawar, chairman, NIIT, said, “NIIT’s ITES Education offering is a result of long and intensive interaction with key ITES industry leaders. This industry participation in curriculum development is the key to NIIT strategy. According to a recent Nasscom study, the ITES sector will grow to be Rs 81,000 crore industry in India and generate over 1.1 million jobs by the 2008. In the year 2001-02, the ITES industry is set to record revenues of Rs 7,100 crore.”

Arun Kumar, president of Nasscom, said, “The ITES industry grew at a rate of 70 percent. We believe that there are four business models which are going to evolve in times to come. The service factories, process experts, service aggregators and bundled service providers.”

Adding further, Pawar said, “Our purpose is to create high quality manpower which will not only help in filling the manpower requirement but also help in moving up the value chain.” It is understood, initially the Planetworkz curriculum will be offered in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai and later extended to other cities.

“The task of preparing a relevant curriculumn that converts Indian youth into global ITES professionals was challenging. By leveraging NIIT’s 20 years of experience in aptitude testing, content development and certification as well as industry inputs, we have a model to set new standards in this industry,” said Suren Singh, head of NIIT’s Planetworkz initiative.
