‘Quality of students determines an institute’s credibility’

Chitra Padmanabhan/Mumbai

K J Somaiya College of Engineering is considered one of the premier institutions providing technical education in Mumbai. Established in 1983 by the Somaiya Trust, which manages all the colleges within the Vidyavihar campus, it is a self-financed engineering institute. Approved by the AICTE in 1993, it is affiliated to the University of Mumbai. Graded ‘A’ by the Government of Maharashtra, the institute is the first engineering college in Maharashtra State to get an accreditation.

The final admission in the merit category is 90 percent marks at HSC level. Emphasising on the fact that the credibility of a college is known by the quality of its students, Dr V M Domkundwar, principal, Somaiya College of Engineering, says, “85% to 90% results is nothing short of an academic achievement and the responses of the students have been extremely encouraging. At least three to four students earn a place in the merit list of the final year examination.”

Apart from excellence in academics, students have also formed associations for various disciplines, like the Electronics Engineering Stud-ents Association, Association of Students of Computer Engineering and Information Technology, etc. Here students are encouraged to organise technical and intellectual programmes, such as technical seminars, lectures, industrial visits, et al. “To facilitate interaction between the students we also have cultural programmes in which many colleges participate. These extracurricular endeavours are completely initiated by the students,” says Dr Munshi Srinivas, vice principal, Somaiya College of Engineering. Every year a ‘yoga’ course is conducted for the benefit of students and staff. Besides exercises, ‘asanas’, ‘pranayama’ and meditation, special courses are conducted for the development of memory and concentration for the improvement of eyesight.

The placement committee headed by Prof NR Gilke has been successful in roping in top companies to recruit their students. Larsen & Toubro, TCS and Reliance, to name a few. “Initially, when the trend of campus placements had just began, we had to put in a lot of effort to place our students in the industry, in spite of their good performance. But once the students started serving in various industries, there was no looking back. And now I can proudly say that the placement level is 75 percent,” says Gilke.

“We have always aspired to provide the best of facilities for our students. Our focus in the next two to three years would be to offer infrastructural facilities like separate seminar halls for various departments, to build a computer centre that will cater to the needs of the CDAC courses that we are about to introduce,” adds Dr V M Domkundwar.
