‘Values are more critical than the vision’

Punita Jasrotia/New Delhi

WORKCULTURE: computer sciences corporation India

Established in 1997, Computer Sciences Corporation India is a wholly owned subsidiary of Computer Sciences Corporation, the second largest computer and data services company in United States, operating in the areas of consulting, systems integration and outsourcing. CSC India (erstwhile known as Policy Management Systems India-PMS India), began its operations at Indore and now has two development centresat Noida and Indore. Having a 526 strong workforce, the company is presently looking at a growth of over 80 percent by the end of this year.

Today CSC India is the fastest growing software development company in central India. For past three consecutive years it has bagged the Government of India’s (STPI) “Best Software Exporter” award in Madhya Pradesh. It is also the first software company in the state to get the ISO 9001 certification. The vision of the organisation is to become one of the top five software companies in India in the next five years. A tough task, but all its dedicated employees believe completely in the possibility. Presently working on domains like the Insurance, Banking, Healthcare and Chemical sectors, the company has also started activities in Business Process Outsourcing. It is planning to set up the third development centre in South India and the corporate office will be shifted from Indore to Noida.

CSC staff members take time off for a social work project

According to Dr Arun K Maheshwari, managing director and chief executive officer of CSC India, the organisation’s core values includecustomer satisfaction, quality compliance, employee development, clear communication, equal opportunity, professionalism and ethical conduct. An open-door policy gives every employee easy access to the management.

“For us values are more critical than the vision. Everything we do is geared towards upholding these values. Each employee is committed to them and this becomes apparent in the orientation of the entire organisation and its working,” he says. Those at the helm of affairs are of course expected to set examples before others. “There is a continuous pressure on the top management to conduct themselves in a certain manner. While earlier the stress was more on preaching, presently the organisation is undergoing the process of practising what they preach so that others can follow their examples,” he adds.

Quality & processes

“Quality in all things” is not a slogan but a fundamental value at CSC India and is put into practice through rigorous quality assurance and training procedures. The Quality movement began in August 1999 and picked up pace when the company was certified to the ISO 9001:1994 standard by Bureau Veritas Quality International (BVQI).

Having already achieved the ISO 9001 certification, the company has presently set a target of CMM Level 4 certification by the end of this year.

Recruitment policy

“From the beginning we have looked for the best people in the industry and today we are proud of our talented and committed professionals. It is due to them that we have been able to achieve remarkable success in a short time. My most important objective is to continue to look for and attract excellent people who can build CSC India to be one of the top software companies,” he says. According to him, ‘performance’ is the key factor which determines selection. To ensure that quality is maintained both in processes and people, the company conducts employee reviews after every six months. They have however not been very successful in implementing an appraisal system.

Training

All fresh engineering graduates are given six to eight weeks of intensive training after joining the company. Internal and external seminars and workshops on technical, communication and people skills keep employees updated on a variety of topics. This is coupled with the company’s reward scheme wherein an individual gets a two-week off to pursue training in his desired technology. Besides framing a well-knit career path for employees, more than 50 percent of new entrants get the opportunity to go to the US in the first year itself.

Work environment

In an effort to provide the best to its employees, CSC has been following the American Standard for physical infrastructure, to provide efficient work area, privacy and aesthetic environment. “We believe that recreation is very important for keeping minds fresh and handling the challenges at CSC India. Indoor recreation facilities include a variety of games and sports tournaments.”

According to Maheshwari, employee participation is the cornerstone of CSC India’s work culture and empowerment at every level is the key policy for the company. Employee-elected committees are allocated funds and given the responsibility to make the necessary decisions. So, while the Employee Advisory Committee liaises between the staff and the top management, the Social Services Committee is engaged in welfare endeavours. The Facilities Committee has been entrusted with the beautification of the company’s five-acre campus. It is the responsibility of the Recreation Committee to organise parties and picnics for employees and their families.

“We profess and practice a free, warm and open culture. We facilitate family togetherness and employee bonding through recreational facilities and activities. Our employees are our biggest asset,” concludes Maheshwari.
